To believe again. . .

An earthquake reaching a magnitude of 8,8 on the Richter scale, with the epicenter near Concepción City, Chile, plunged many areas into ruins and killed more than 300 people during the early morning hours of February 27th 2010.

The natural disaster tore down hundreds of buildings, left roads inaccessible, caused bridges to collapse and triggered eight meter high waves in the Pacific Ocean which left the destruction of many small coastal fishing villages in their wake.

The devastation left many families from poorer areas where building and construction work were not strong enough to resist this terrible phenomenon, homeless.

In Sagrada Familia a rural school called “La Higuerilla”, providing schooling for more than 40 kids, was left in disarray after the earthquake destroyed the pre-primary section and the lunchroom facility of the school. Headmistress Irma San Martin, staff and parents did not give up and adapted their schooling roster so that the kids could continue their schoolday.

In the mists of the disaster a helping hand rose from Fairhills Chile, emboldening those affected to believe in light amidst seeming darkness. The Joint Body of Sociedad Agrícola y Frutícola Sol del Maipo Limitada and the Municipal Education Department of Sagrada Familia, represented by its Director, Edgardo Barra Moraga, reached an agreement whereby Fairhills Chile donated USD$11.500.00 and GBP2500.00(raised from client donations) to cover the costs of the building materials, and the Municipal Department contributed the funds to cover all construction and supervision works.

Today, due to the agreement reached, a new, fully equipped pre-primary section with proper sanitation facilities are being constructed so the children can return to their normal routine within the next two months.
